Over the past couple decades, there was been an increase of social enterprises. In general it refers to a form of business that has a social purpose, and not to just make a profit. Social purpose generally means that the organization aims to improve human, social, or environmental well-being. Social enterprises are either for-profit or non-profit. Non-profit social enterprises are charities and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and they do not have a profit motive.
This notion leads us to our discussion questions. Is the label "for-profit social enterprise" appropriate? Can businesses really be separated from a profit motive?
