As we embark on our final project for the school year of creating our own business, let's reflect on the concept of profit. The main purpose in business is to make money, right? A profit, is basically a financial gain, especially the difference between the amount earned and the amount spent in buying, operating, or producing something. A profit most definitely drives a major part of the business industry.
Over the past couple decades, there was been an increase of social enterprises. In general it refers to a form of business that has a social purpose, and not to just make a profit. Social purpose generally means that the organization aims to improve human, social, or environmental well-being. Social enterprises are either for-profit or non-profit. Non-profit social enterprises are charities and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and they do not have a profit motive.
This notion leads us to our discussion questions. Is the label "for-profit social enterprise" appropriate? Can businesses really be separated from a profit motive?
